Alajuelense Deny Matarrita Transfer Rumors, Defer To NYCFC

Share

Reports started swirling on social media late Wednesday night when a Costa Rican reporter stated that Matarrita was set to sign a contract with Borussia Dortmund Thursday ahead of a $4 million transfer.

Earlier today we were able to verify that initial statement was indeed incorrect. There is no agreement between NYCFC and Dortmund, or any other club, for the transfer of Ronald Matarrita. There were no meetings taking place today.

There have been discussions between NYCFC and Alajuelense regarding the full transfer of Matarrita’s transfer rights as we reported yesterday.

Tonight Alajuelense went a step further issuing a statement to the press regarding the rumors swirling.

Liga Deportiva Alajuelense clarifies that the transfer rights of Ronald Matarrita belong to New York City FC

The Liga Deportiva Alajuelense communicates and clarifies that the transfer rights of the player Ronald Matarrita belong to New York City FC of Major League Soccer (MLS) of the United States.
Any negotiations of a possible sale of the defender to falls on the team which currently hold his transfer rights.

We believe it is important to dispel any doubts in the face of constant press inquiries this Thursday. Liga Deportiva Alajuelense will no longer refer to the matter.

Given NYCFC’s penchant for secrecy, one would imagine that their front office is not too happy about the very public negotiations that have been taking place between the two clubs.

As of today Ronald Matarrita is a New York City FC player. With the MLS Expansion Draft coming next week and the transfer window fully opening we expect Claudio Reyna will have his hands busy. Whether or not Matarrita is still on the roster when the season kicks off in 2017 is yet to be seen. But he will, in all likelihood, not be leaving NYCFC before the end of the year.
