Report: Matarrita Weighing Options; In No Rush To Leave New York City FC

Share

According to a report in Costa Rican newspaper La Prensa Libre, Ronald Matarrita is weighing his options when it comes to where he will play next year.

Early last week we reported that NYCFC was in talks with Matarrita’s former club Liga Deportiva Alajuelense to buyout his full transfer rights. That report was followed with rumors surfacing that Matarrita would be signing a contract with Borussia Dortmund by Thursday, December 8th. Those rumors were denied by Alajuelense and have since been proven false.

On December 9th, La Prensa Libre reported speaking with Matarrita regarding the ongoing discussions between his agent, NYCFC and his former club Alajuelense.

“There are some topics pending there, but the decision of changing teams is more my decision than any other persons. Yes, we are working together: my representative, myself and all the parties involved, we want to make the best decision.

“If it turns out I leave in January, fine, and if not, I’ll stay another year in New York. It would be OK with me to keep up the good momentum I’ve having.”

As of Monday December 12th, there have been no negotiations between NYCFC and any other clubs regarding the transfer of Ronald Matarrita. The only discussions regarding Matarrita have been with Alajuelense for his full transfer rights.

There have been inquiries from several Bundesliga clubs including Hamburg and Borussia Dortmund, as well as clubs in Portugal, Turkey and France according to his agent. Despite the inquiries, NYCFC have not held transfer talks with any of the clubs as they would like to finalize a deal with Alajuelense before discussing his full transfer.

It is clear that Matarrita is in no rush to leave New York City as he is enjoying his playing time under Patrick Vieira. He has stated in the past that he would like to play in Europe but it’s evident that he would like to find a team and situation that fits him best before making the move. Many promising players have languished on the bench of European clubs, seeing their once promising careers stagnate and Matarrita is wise to be patient.
