There was plenty going on this weekend, including in the world of NYCFC. Let’s take a quick look at the stories you missed and what you need to know for the week ahead.
Sunderland Eye Vieira
English tabloid The Sun are reporting that Sunderland would want Patrick Vieira to step in as their manager if current manager David Moyes quits or is sacked.
Vieira was allegedly on Sunderland’s managerial wishlist as early as 2014 according to previous reports. Patrick Vieira is not expected to depart NYCFC this season.
Khedira Not For Sale (Yet)
According to Italian news outlet CalcioMercato, Sami Khedira’s days at Juventus are likely coming to a close. Recent reports have tied Khedira to a move to NYCFC, however Juventus have heavily relied on Khedira this season and aren’t willing to let him go before the summer transfer window.
If Claudio Reyna and the New York City FC front office want to start a season with all three DPs available for a change, they will have to either look elsewhere or make Juventus an offer they can’t refuse.
NYCFC Head South For Pre-Season
Escaping the cold NYC temperatures, the team flies to Jacksonville, Florida today to begin their preseason. The new players will have a week and a half to get to know each other and impress Vieira before their first scrimmage against Jacksonville University on Thursday, February 2nd.
Following two weeks in Florida, the team flies to Ecuador for a friendly against Ecuadorian club Emelec on February 8th. They’ll wrap up their pre-season with a four game tournament in Tuscon, Arizona in the Desert Diamond Cup with matches on February 15th, 18th, 22nd & 25th.
Diskerud Not With Team Yet
There seems to have been no detente between Mix Diskerud and Patrick Vieira as the out of favor midfielder isn’t flying with the rest of the team to Florida. Diskerud stayed in Norway which leaves one to wonder if the former national team midfielder will be given a chance in 2017 or if the team is willing to eat his contract and let him watch from the stands.
Diskerud has been in Norway for a few weeks and even trained with Norwegian club Tromsø earlier this month. When asked about a return to Norway, he wouldn’t rule anything out but said a move back to Norway wouldn’t be likely yet.
