According to a report from ESPN Mexico, Argentine winger Maxi Moralez is set to join NYCFC. Both sides have agreed to a deal, all that is missing is his signature.
Moralez is a 29 year old winger/attacking midfielder who was under contract at Liga MX side León but, according to reports, has worked to end his contract. Moralez was linked to Brazilian club Grêmio as well as Argentine clubs Racing and Boca Juniors, however the latest report has him en route to New York City.
Moralez joined León this past summer from Serie A side Atalanta and has struggled to consistently get minutes having made only 14 appearances in 30 of the clubs’ matches across all competitions. Of the 14 appearances he made, only 4 of them came as a starter. Despite the limited appearances, he managed to score 2 goals and tally three assists in under 600 total minutes played.
The move if confirmed would lead one to believe Patrick Vieira doesn’t find his current attacking options sufficient. The diminutive Moralez comes in at about 5’3″ which is approximately the same height as fellow countryman Luciano Acosta of DC United.
ESPN’s report states that Moralez will head to the US to sign the contract ahead of the move which will be announced next week. Patrick Vieira has said he would like to have his team together before they arrive in Tucson for their pre-season tournament.
NYCFC acquired an international roster spot today from Colorado. At the moment it is unclear how many spots NYCFC currently has. Requests for clarification have not been answered at the time of publication.
