Following New York City FC’s 2-2 draw with Columbus at CitiField in Queens, NYCFC are playoff bound and set to sit out the knockout round and go straight into the Eastern Conference Semi-Final where they will host Leg 2 on November 5th at Yankee Stadium.
NYCFC who had been forced to play at CitiField as a result of the Yankees preparing for a World Series at Yankee Stadium had also been forced to reschedule a possible Eastern Conference Semi-Final match at Yankee Stadium on November 5th due to a Rutgers University football/wrestling double header which was scheduled prior to the 2017 season.
Neither Rutgers or NYCFC could have foreseen the New York Yankees post-season surge this season and as a result there was poor planning on behalf of all three organizations. The result of the Yankees success was a game of stadium musical chairs. Following the announcement that NYCFC would play their final regular season match at Yankee Stadium the club announced they would also move their possible November 5th playoff game to November 1st due to the Rutgers game. Rutgers then announced they had canceled the Yankee Stadium event due to the Yankees current playoff run.
NYCFC was scrambling to find a suitable stadium venue for a possible post-season match should they not finish in second place in the MLS Eastern Conference. The picture for NYCFC’s playoffs was ominously clouded.
Following the New York Yankees elimination by the Houston Astros in Game 7 of the ALCS, the schedule for Yankee Stadium was left wide open. With today’s 2-2 draw NYCFC finished in second place and as a result the team re-re-scheduled their November 1st match back to November 5th at Yankee Stadium for Leg 2. Leg 1 will be played on the road.
